Toussian Tusyan Masks

Tusyan mask

This artwork from the Upper Volta region represents an archetype, which overturns clean shapes into an appalling organic metamorphosis. Deformities and grotesque features emphasize the magical and ritual status, giving a beautiful example of primitivism. This type of African art inspired the artist Max Ernest in 1934, as evidenced by his famous sculpture “Bird’s Head”, displayed at the Musée Barbier-Muller of Geneva.
