Teke mask

540

This beautiful kind of mask was worn by members of ‘kiduma’, a secret society which took charge of social celebrations and rituals. The mask was held in place with a bite bar at the back, which the wearer held in his teeth. These masks are usually decorated with geometric symbols and colored with clay and paint.

The Teke people come from Congo and Gabon. They are well known as traders; in fact, the name ‘teke’ means ‘to buy’.
