Passport mask by Dan

Passport mask by Dan. Sharing a wide variety of uses, small masks called ‘passports’ are the personal masks of initiated adult men. They were kept on personal shrines in the houses or on themselves. Diviners recommended to the children to wear them to ward off the evil or to cure illnesses. These passport masks placed on shrines received the offerings and prayers of their owners, accumulating in time a rich patina of different substances.

The people of Dan extends on the north-west of Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. This ethnic group lives mainly in forested regions; it’s made up of farmers and growers who regularly move from the forest to create new fields. They can also live by hunting and fishing. The art of Dan is expressed mainly with wooden masks, which give a lot of importance and power to those who wear them.
