Ritual Lele mask
The apparent aesthetic simplicity of this mask contrasts with the elaborate headdress, handmade with natural fibers. The interlacement is extraordinary; it shows an ancient and complex technique about using fibers.
The wooden mask is almost divided in two parts: the forehead is colored with kaolin earth tones, while the rest of the face is painted with dark patina. Along the perimeter there is a decoration of white shells and colored beads. At the base of the face, there is a thick white beard, composed of natural fibers. The headgear gives volume to the mask; it is handmade, using an elaborate plot, showing an old and complex technical use of natural fibers.
