Zoomorphic helmet by the ethnic group Bobo, from Burkina Faso. The figure represents an elephant’s head, an animal respected as a symbol of strength and power. The bright colors enhance the magnetism of this mask, which was worn during the male initiation rites. For those occasions, in addition to the mask, the costume also included foliage and twigs, to make even more spectacular propitiatory dances. Big trunk, long fangs, pronounced ears and large round eyes: they are all elements which convey the stylized vision of this majestic animal.

Bobo mask with beak. This large wooden mask, used during ritual ceremonies, merges animal and human elements. The distinctive feature of the artwork is its strongly projecting beak. Above, there is a wooden board; the lateral elements resemble to some arms, so that the ensemble vaguely resembles to a human figure. Everything is decorated with beautiful geometric patterns and grooves.
